Which GPS Accessories Are Best?
If you’re about to make a new GPS purchase, then you’ll want to also check-out all the extras you’ll be needing. So many systems these days are meant to be portable and so they require mounting devices, carrying cases, power cords and, well, whatever else you can think of to jazz up or personalize your system. When you’re comparing accessories, the differences will become obvious. The way some can be used will appeal to you more than others will, plus the quality of some will be higher. What is the best way to comparison shop GPS accessories? We took a hard look at the accessories for the more well-known GPS’s. We’d like to tell you about it, now.
It is not difficult to find plenty of consumer reviews of the products you are considering. You can find some great reviews on various internet blog sites that offer the ability for users to give their opinions on a multitude of products. Those reviews that are posted by the manufacturer are okay although a bit biased, whereas the user reviews are more accurate and not sponsored or solicited by the company itself. These reviews are typically better because they are truthful and come from people who have real experiences with the products and can tell you whether or not the product is worth buying. Getting reviews from real users is always better than trusting a corporately approved website.
A very popular power cable for Garmin units is the Garmin Nuvi Vehicle power cable.
It is compatible with the Nuvi series of the Garmin GPS systems (we don’t know if it will work as well with the other systems but it is usually best to purchase an adaptor that is made for your specific system). The cord allows you to plug your GPS system into your car’s cigarette lighter (much the same way you would power an iPod). It’s great for long trips when your system’s battery won’t last for the whole trip.
You will really need, in almost all cases, to get a mounting device for your GPS. If you really don’t want to spend, then you can take advantage (?) of the bottom line mounting assembly that uses suction cups – oh, it’s free with almost all units. You can also shop around and you’ll discover some really very nice and clever mounting devices available. Dash mounting is possible because there are a few of them out there. These are usually portable which makes them nice to have on hand when you do not need to use the GPS to get around.
Just like all other things in life, GPS accessories are not equal. Sure there are some off brand accessories that you can buy from discount outlets. Doing this however can be dicey because discount accessories have a way of breaking or malfunctioning just when you most need them to behave correctly.
You would be surprised that even the more “pricier” and higher quality GPS extras are really not all that expensive. So just remember the real key is doing your homework in the form of good research.
